Welcome back guys! Theres a lot to catch you guys up on. Recently, due to a lack of communication within our group we unfortunately had to replace one of our former group members (Vince) with a new member (Andres). This change was rather sudden and unpredictable and quite frankly late into the game. However, it's what was best for our group. Andres has shown that he's capable of completing his assignments on time while collaborating with this two-minute film. All roles will remain the same only this time Andres will fulfill Vince’s previous role as actor and coordinator. Now that we have that established, let's move onto today's true purpose... picking a genre. (yay so much fun... right??) Well, you can let me know at the end of today's blog.
After thorough research, my peers and I decided the genre for our 2-minute film would be “drama” being it correlates the best with the theme of mental health. We're ecstatic to finally have the majority of our planning completed to then be able to move along to the filming process! In the midst of finding the perfect genre for this film I began to reflect on how today's society is and the standards that us teens are held to regarding our wellbeing. Ultimately, that's what prompted us to make our film centered around mental health considering all the different ways it affects us teenagers in today's new culture. We concluded, what better genre than drama. The film may be only two minutes long but, the message? See, that will last a lifetime!
Drama doesn't just refer to stories that explore human experiences, emotions, conflict. However, it tends to focus on character development, emotional depth, and intricate plot lines. What we feed our brains on a daily basis is the ultimate indicator of how our mental state may be. That said, what better way to embrace that than through the magical aspects of film!!
The planning process:
So, remember how I told you guys that me and my peers conducted thorough research to be able to come up with our genre. Well, let me walk you through the process of how that turned out for us. To begin with, my group and I don’t necessarily meet up as much as we’d like buttt, we still manage to keep open and ongoing communication through a private group chat on iMessage. Additionally, we were all scrambling trying to figure out an appropriate time to meet during school being that our after-school life can often times be hectic (this was honestly the most stressful part of this whole process). Thankfully we were able to squeeze about 30-40 min during lunch to do some research which truly was a big help, and it allowed us to further our knowledge some more on why certain films use specific genres.
Research:
AH yes, the part we all dread... research. Based off my prior knowledge on “drama” I gathered in the film industry drama was the focus on mental health, resilience, and personal growth. Its ultimate goal is to encourage its audiences to sit back and reflect on their own well-being and to spark conversations about mental health. A film that came to mind was “Inside Out”. As a child watching this film enlightened me on the different emotions a kid may go through and the consequences that these deeply rooted feelings may have on yourself or others. Although “Inside Out” is classified as a family drama, it can also fall under the genre wellness being it navigates Riley’s different emotions and mental wellbeing throughout the film.
To delve deeper into my research I decided to research how the genre “drama” can create an emotional impact towards an audience that’ll last a lifetime. “The Future of Film: Cinematic Wellness | A Futurists Perspective” by Lindsay Angelo states, “Therapeutic Storytelling: Films can serve as therapeutic tools, helping audiences process emotions and experiences. By watching characters navigate challenges and triumphs, viewers may find solace, inspiration, or even a sense of validation for their own struggles. Mindfulness and Relaxation: Some films promote mindfulness and relaxation. Nature documents, for example, invite viewers to escape into serene landscapes and calming visuals, promoting a sense of peace. Films that focus on drama themes can also encourage viewers to escape into serene landscapes and calming visuals, promoting a sense of peace. Films that focus on drama themes can also encourage viewers to reflect on their own lives and well being.” With this information, I now know the value of incorporating certain visuals to create an emotional impact towards an audience. Considering that my role in this 2-minute film is editing, I plan on adding diegetic sound with the addition of low/high lighting to highlight the good/bad seasons that teens may undergo regarding their mental health. Not to mention, this will reveal to the audience how vital their wellness is.
