Using Voiceover as a Storytelling Tool #2

In filmmaking a sound bridge is a resourceful technique where a sound or piece of music moves along from one scene to the next, resulting in a seamless transition between shots. This technique allows a movie to contain a natural flow, overall creating a firm connection within scenes, even if there happens to be a change in location or time. Sound bridges may also enhance the emotional impact of a film being they are the key indicators of the mood between one moment to the following. In the 2007 film "Atonement" music subtly varies from one scene to the next, connecting the strong emotional weight of the character's actions aross time.

The use of sound here not only smooths the transition between scenes but, also heightens the emotional tension therefore drawing the audience into the story deeply.

When using sound bridge in a film I would begin by connecting two scenes that reflect a shift in tone or setting. For example, the first scene would begin with the sound of a bustling city street- traffic, voices, footsteps-all collectively merging into a loud, chaotic environment. As the camera shifts to a more intimate scene in a dimly lit room, I would use the lingering sound of a distant car horn or a faint subway rumble to distinguish the gap. The overall effect I would aim to create here is a sense of contrast within the outside world and the more personal moment in the room, but also a feeling of connection.
