What makes a short film opening stand out? #9

Hay!

Welcome backkk :)

I wanted to gather some research on what makes a short film opening stand out prior to me filming my 2-minute film. This will ultimately help guide me along this new journey in the “film world”. I know it’s only research but this is making me pretty excited for when filming season comes!

My exact reaction…

Well, based off my own knowledge on films and what i’ve seen in opening scenes of movies, the most important part of an opening scene is the hook! That said I need something at the start of the short film that’ll automatically captivate the audience and make them curious as to what else will be shown.

Now for the fun part research:

When searching up on google “what makes a short film opening stand out?” I came across a article by “New York Film Academy” and instantly I knew I could trust this source with reliable information.

The main pointers I got:

(1) Communication is key. Which I 100% agree with especially that i’m working with a partner. I want us to be on the same page while also creating an environment where we both feel open with one another to share our thoughts and new big ideas!
(2) Being creative with cinematography. This may seem small but it’s so true. Especially being this is the first time i’ll be creating and editing a film like this, I want to be as creative as possible. I also want to try new things and add as many effects as possible in hopes of making a stellar film.
(3) Prioritizing exceptional sound. Being that I plan on adding both diagetic and non-diagetic sound, it’s important that we’re able to do both and still have the audio clear enough for the audience to thoroughly understand what’s being said.
(4) Lastly, making hard cuts. Considering that this is a short film out goal is to create a meaningful story with the short amount of time that we have. The transitions and color correcting will play a huge role in creating meaning for the audience ultimately creating a lasting impact on the audience.

Welp, that’s all for today. Have a good one guys!
